1. Cabo San Lucas (the best weather on the list)

If the only thing your group cares about is being warm and playing good golf, Cabo wins January outright. Daytime highs sit at 75 to 80°F, humidity is low, rain is essentially nonexistent, and the desert-meets-ocean courses at Diamante, Quivira and Cabo del Sol are genuinely world class. Mornings are mild rather than cold, so an early tee time is a pleasure instead of an ordeal.

Two honest caveats. It is a peak-season destination in January, so resort pricing is high and the best tee times go early. And several of the marquee courses are private or resort-guest-only, so where you stay determines what you can play. Check course access before you book the hotel, not after.

Best for: groups with budget, milestone trips, partner trips where the resort matters as much as the golf.

2. Palm Springs (the most reliable golf in America in January)

The Coachella Valley is the most dependable January golf in the United States. Highs of 70°F, almost no rain, over 100 courses inside a 20 mile radius, and a density of stay-and-play packages that makes a 4-round weekend easy to assemble. Mornings are cool but noticeably milder than Scottsdale because the valley sits lower.

The one date to know is the American Express tournament in La Quinta, usually mid to late January. It closes several PGA West courses to public play for the week and lifts rates across the valley. Either build the trip around it deliberately or avoid that week entirely.

Best for: high-volume golf groups, West Coast access, groups who want maximum rounds per dollar in peak season.

3. Scottsdale (great golf, cold mornings, peak prices)

Scottsdale in January is very good golf at the worst price of the year. Highs of 65 to 70°F are comfortable, the desert light in winter is spectacular, and the course conditioning is at its annual best. But overnight lows drop into the low 40s, and the 7 AM tee time your group instinctively books will be cold enough to matter, occasionally with a frost delay. Book 9 or 10 AM instead and the trip transforms.

January is the heart of the Florida snowbird season, and the further south you go the better the numbers get. Naples and Palm Beach sit at 73 to 78°F with low humidity, which is the most pleasant golf weather in the continental United States in January. Central Florida (Orlando, Streamsong, TPC Sawgrass) runs cooler at 65 to 70°F and is exposed to cold fronts that can drop a morning into the 40s for a couple of days.

5. The Algarve (half the price, honest caveats)

The Algarve is the value play of the month and the only one on this list where a group can play a lot of golf without peak-season pricing. Temperatures run 16 to 17°C (low 60s Fahrenheit), sunshine is still 6 hours a day, and green fees and villa rates sit at their annual floor. Courses are quiet enough that you can play the same day you decide to.

Destinations to skip in January

• Scotland and Ireland: the links are open and the die-hards will tell you it is atmospheric. It is also 5°C, dark by 4 PM, and genuinely unpleasant. Push to May or September.
• Bandon Dunes: the wettest stretch of the year on the Oregon coast. The golf is playable and the resort stays open, but this is not the trip you are imagining.
• Pebble Beach: January is peak rain on the Monterey Peninsula, and the AT&T Pro-Am in early February distorts pricing well before it arrives.
• Pinehurst and the Carolinas: daytime highs in the low 50s, frequent frost delays, and courses on winter greens at some properties. Wait for April.
• Myrtle Beach: cheap for a reason. Rounds are genuinely inexpensive but 50°F and windy off the Atlantic is not what the group signed up for.

Booking timing

January is the hardest month to book late, because supply is small and demand is concentrated. Book 90 days out for Cabo and Palm Springs, 60 to 90 days for Scottsdale and Florida. The Algarve is the exception and can be booked 30 days out without much penalty.

The single most valuable timing decision in this month is avoiding the New Year week. December 28 to January 3 carries the highest rates of the winter, often with multi-night minimums.
